Rags to Riches

Happy Sunday everyone!
I ran across this old photo yesterday and I think it makes an interesting story.  When I was maybe 4 (1953), our house burned to the ground. I am the youngest of 3 and I have very little memory of the fire. Here is how it has been told.  We lived in Colorado. We were poor.  My father was a tenant farmer and we had just moved into the house. My mother had just refinished the floors and everything was painted fresh and pretty. Our family had gone to town and as we were returning we could see the fire. My sister said our mother was crying (I only recall that happening once). I am told it was an electrical fire.  We were lucky it didn't happen while we were asleep.
So all we were left with was the clothes on our back and an old car.  I am sure there was no money in the bank, and I am positive there was no insurance.  The picture below is where we stayed for a few weeks until we drove to Iowa and stayed with relatives until my Father found another job.

Well, I am by no means wealthy, but I am rich. My husband and I have a nice house and children and grandchildren that give us love and enjoyment beyond measure.

What do you think?  I bet there was no A/C.

Wow!! You have come a long way Gail! It is funny how kids dont remember the house.. they remember fun times! To watch your home burn down would have been so tramatic! Your parents must have been wonderful because you were molded into the person you are today... rich in friends!!

A great story! - People just coped in those days - wonder how todays young families would survive in those circumstances?
